Art from Behind the Walls

September 6, 2010

Welcome to the website of Adam Loya (Turtle), an artist currently incarcerated in California, USA. Click here to read updates on Adam’s situation.

Adam is a passionate, prolific self-taught artist who expresses his Aztec cultural roots combined with contemporary design in paño and paper art.

Adam was incarcerated as a youth for a crime he didn’t commit and has now lived half his life in prison. Many of his hours have been spent in solitude.

Miraculously he has survived with a positive outlook on life and created a wide variety of art forms. Some of his art expresses his heartfelt love and romantic nature. Others are more playful. His art is created for love from love, from very limited resources (i.e. sometimes using sheet corners and envelopes).

How amazing it is that much beauty has emerged from this oppressive situation. All of this art is uniquely created with the focused intention of expressing his love for his Beloved.
